Smelts are a small
elongated freshwater fish that reach approximately 90mm in length. They are a
schooling fish that is native to eastern and southern Australia. They are a darker
olive brown colour on top with a silver white under belly.
They are a great addition to any tank, pond or dam and are used as a food source for
larger predatory species, such as Australian bass that love eating them, or are used
for mosquito control. They are ferocious feeders and will readily devour mosquito
larvae so they are in high demand for mosquito control. They are a small animal feeder
eating mosquito larvae and zooplankton and also have the advantage of being frog
friendly as they do not consume tadpoles.
Good aquarium pets that will readily take any of the commercial fish food; being
very active and always on the move in an aquarium.
